Why Does My Drain Keep Clogging?

A drain that clears for a day and slows down again is telling you the underlying blockage may still be there. Pay attention to which fixtures are affected and whether you hear gurgling or see water backing up elsewhere.

Why does the same drain clog again?

Hair, soap residue, grease, or other buildup may remain in the line after a temporary fix. In some cases the blockage is farther down the pipe. The location and cause matter: clearing what you can see at the opening may not clear the full restriction.

What if several drains are slow?

One slow sink often points to a problem near that fixture. Several slow fixtures, water backing up into a lower drain, or a toilet affecting a shower can suggest a larger drain-line issue. Stop using the affected fixtures and call a plumber when wastewater is backing up.

Are gurgling sounds a warning sign?

Gurgling can happen when drainage or venting is not working as it should. Tell the plumber which fixture makes the sound and whether it happens when another fixture drains. A sound by itself is not a diagnosis, but it is a useful clue.

What should I do before the plumber arrives?

Avoid adding more water if it is backing up. Note which fixtures are slow, when it started, and whether any drain product has already been used. Tell the plumber about any chemicals so the visit can be handled safely. Never mix drain cleaners.
