Why Is My AC Running but Not Cooling?

Your air conditioner is running, but the house still feels hot. The first things to check are the thermostat setting, the air filter, and whether air is coming from the vents. If those look normal and the cooling does not return, the system needs a closer look.

Why is my AC blowing warm air?

The thermostat may be set to fan instead of cool, or the set temperature may be higher than the room temperature. A clogged filter can restrict airflow. Other possibilities include a problem with the outdoor unit, a frozen coil, or a refrigerant issue. Those last problems need a trained technician to diagnose; warm air alone does not tell us which part failed.

What can I check before calling?

Make sure the thermostat is on cool and set below the current indoor temperature. If your filter is accessible, check whether it is dirty and replace it with the correct type if needed. Look from a safe distance to see whether the outdoor unit is running and whether anything is blocking airflow around it. If you see ice on the refrigerant line or indoor equipment, turn the cooling off and call for guidance. Do not chip away ice or open equipment panels.

Why is the AC running constantly?

On a very hot North Carolina afternoon, a system may run longer than usual. If the indoor temperature keeps climbing, airflow is weak, or the system never seems to catch up, it is time to have the cause checked. A running fan does not necessarily mean the system is actually cooling.

When should I call for AC repair?

Call when the basic settings and filter check do not help, you see ice or water where it should not be, the breaker trips repeatedly, or the house is getting hotter. Tell us what the thermostat shows and whether the outdoor unit appears to be running. Those details help us get started.
